The United States takes up a very large landmass in North America. In fact, it is the fourth largest landmass of any country in the world only behind Russia, Canada and China. The first two countries on that list are largely uninhabitable because of severe freezing conditions. The United States, on the other hand, is entirely inhabitable. But, this desirable land isn’t only attractive to humans. Creatures we consider to be pests are also in plentiful numbers, with no higher concentration found anywhere in the country as in the south.
The “south” is typically defined as states located below Maryland on the map and includes Texas and every state east of it. The area is known for its hot and humid summers and relatively mild winters. Much of the produce the country enjoys is grown in this region.
There are no higher concentration of pests anywhere in North America than that which is found in the southeastern United States. In this article we want to go over a list of pests which are most commonly found in this area.
Ants – There is no more abundant pest than the ant. There are over 65 species of ant in this area. Some of them are pretty benign while others produce a venomous bite that can really hurt. Ants are an issue that always get worse and a problem that never solves itself.
Roaches – These insects are pure scavengers. They will eat anything, anywhere and have zero standard of living. In fact, they can even survive up to two weeks with no head. They carry and spread disease and are not good to have anywhere near your living area.
Mosquitoes – Notoriously considered “the most deadly pest in history”, the mosquito has killed hundreds of millions of people throughout history through the spread of bloodborne diseases. Malaria and yellow fever are two of the deadliest diseases this creature spreads.
Rodents – Rats and mice will move into your home and scavenge food, many times right under your nose. By the time you notice them, there is usually an infestation. Rodents also spread disease and have caused many millions of deaths.
Termites – These insects feast on plant fibers including wood. They can totally destroy housing structures and be a serious headache for the homeowner. The one good thing about them is that they are not dangerous individually.
Spiders – These 8 legged creatures are everywhere. They typically chase after insects and small animals but some are dangerous to humans and they will bite if they feel threatened. Many times people receive a bite from a spider they never even see. This can be especially troubling if the spider is venomous.
Bed Bugs – The bed bug is a parasite that feeds on the blood of the host animal. In the case of humans, they will set up shop inside the bed itself and attack you while you sleep. They leave red welts and can be very aggravating.
