How to Clean Trash Cans and Eliminate Odors

While trash cans serve us tirelessly, they do not get special care in return. Garbage cans often get overlooked in terms of routine cleaning. It is suggested to give a good deep clean and a scrub-down to the trash can at least once a month. Regular trash can cleaning service is the only way to fight lingering odors and deter bugs and nasty insects.

Since deep cleaning a trash can seems labor-intensive, most people put it off till it gets out of hand. Fortunately, it does not require fancy tools, simply a few basic cleaning supplies and steps will be enough to eliminate pesky odors.

Here are some tips for removing pesky odors from trash cans

Disinfecting and cleaning a garbage can does not have to be a dreaded chore. It requires the person to follow a few expert-sourced, digestible steps to keep the trash can smelling fresh. After taking out the trash, take a look inside to see if it needs a deep cleaning.

Get Cleaning Supplies 

A few cleaning supplies and tools are required for the deep-clean process, some of which you may already possess. Get rubber gloves, cleaning solution, disinfectant spray, scrub brush, and old towels.Grab a face mask. You may be familiar with your garbage bin, but the smell can still assail you. Considering the particles and what-have-you in the bin, wear a KN95 mask or have one around just in case. 

Alternatively, make an all-natural cleaning solution that works on a variety of surfaces. Use common ingredients available in your home to make a cleaner that works wonders. A simple cleaning solution would include 1 cup of water, 4 cups of cleaning vinegar, and a half cup of dish soap.

Apply a Cleaner 

Prior to applying the cleaner, use a biodegradable wipe or a paper towel to wipe the remaining food and trash particles. It is done to avoid nasty mess when scrubbing and cleaning the trash can from the inside.

Sprinkle the interior with baking soda to remove caked-on grime and eliminate pesky odor. Apply the homemade or store-bought cleaner generously and let it sit for approximately 30 minutes before scrubbing.

Scrub 

Use a nylon-bristled scrubbing brush or toilet brush to scrub the exterior and interior of the garbage can. A long-handled brush is recommended for scrubbing to reach the bottom of the can. 

Sprinkle more cleaning solution when cleaning stubborn spots. Do not just focus on the trash can’s interior, spray solution on the exterior and removable lids to remove any grime.

Disinfect and Rinse

After scrubbing the trash can inside out, use a garden hose to rinse it thoroughly. Remove the lid and let it dry in the sun. Alternatively, use microfiber towels to dry the trash can.  

While disinfecting the trash bin is optional, it will ensure germs-free garbage can and eliminate unwanted, lingering odors. A natural disinfectant will target nasty bacteria and viruses that cause odor. Spray the natural disinfectant and let it sit for 5 minutes to work its magic. Lastly, sprinkle baking soda at the bottom for a fresh scent before inserting a new bag. 

In brief, regular cleaning is the only effective way of getting rid of stubborn smells. If you are unable to eliminate lingering odors, hire professionals to deal with this complex task.
