Heard you’ve decided to invest in a smart home? Well, as someone who’s been living in a smart home for a couple of years now, I can assure you that your life is going to become a lot more convenient. However, keep in mind that it’ll only be easy when you follow some of the few rules of creating a smart home.
My journey of creating a smart home wasn’t a smooth one. I made several costly mistakes and ignored some handy tips that could’ve elevated my smart home experience.
Nonetheless, I’ve rectified those mistakes now and have plenty of experience to share. Here, I’ll explain a few things you need to keep in mind while creating a smart home.
So, let’s start!
Do: Have A Reliable Internet Connection
Having a high-speed and reliable connection is one of the most basic requirements of creating a smart home. Keep in mind that most devices require reliable connectivity to access their full features.
Also, every connection has limited bandwidth. And, when you add more smart devices to the same network, on top of your daily online activities, its bandwidth keeps on decreasing. Consequently, a time comes when your connection has no spare bandwidth, which causes smart devices to become inefficient.
It happened to me several times, back when I was subscribed to a local ISP. And trust me, I know it’s utterly frustrating when smart home devices glitch due to a spotty connection. After some research, I found out that I had Verizon 5G home internet near me, so I decided to give it a go and subscribed to its affordable, yet high-speed internet plan.
Fortunately, Verizon’s fiber connectivity resolved my bandwidth issues. And, after adding more smart home devices, I have not faced any connectivity issues again with Verizon Internet.
Do: Assess Your Smart Home Needs
I believe it’s easier to get carried away when you’re creating a smart home. With hundreds of smart gadgets available, most people end up buying products they don’t really need. Besides breaking their bank, people end up with gadgets that offer no functionality to their smart homes.
So, I recommend that you analyze your smart home needs before investing in any product.
Also, don’t get all smart devices at once. First, add a few gadgets and understand how they work. And, when you get familiarized with them, assess how other devices can bring more convenience to your smart home.
This way, being surrounded by multiple smart gadgets won’t become overwhelming. And at the same time, it will save you from excessive spending on smart home devices.
Do: Create A Smart Home Ecosystem
If you truly want to enjoy the perks of living in a smart home, it’s best to ensure that all your gadgets are compatible.
Speaking from experience, I faced zero difficulties while connecting compatible devices with my speaker so I could control them via voice commands. But, as for incompatible devices, I had to manage them separately via their apps. As I had not considered this factor, controlling numerous gadgets separately became a headache in the long run.
Here, I recommend investing in compatible devices so you can create a seamless ecosystem. Also, before you purchase any smart gadget, research its compatibility. Other than this, always check a gadget’s specifications as it might also mention its compatibility list.
Don’t: Go For Self-Installation
DIY (Do It Yourself) or self-installation is fun, for sure, until your smart gadgets start malfunctioning.
Even though I had no technical expertise in installing such gadgets, I decided to save a few bucks and opt for DIY installation. I faced almost no problems whatsoever in installing gadgets that required little to no technical expertise.
Feeling confident, I followed some YouTube tutorials to install complex smart gadgets like a thermostat and smart sensors. Eventually, both gadgets started malfunctioning within a month, and I had to call in a repair team to fix them.
So, I believe professional installation is a better approach, especially when you don’t have the technical knowledge. Plus, while getting professional help can be a little expensive, it will save you from any hassle in the long run.
Don’t: Invest in Cheap Gadgets
Frankly speaking, smart gadgets are not extravagant, but they’re not cheap either. And some people prefer low-priced devices with inferior quality to save a few bucks.
Here, I would not suggest going for cheaper devices, as there can be several problems with them. For instance, low-priced gadgets can offer fewer features and functionality, or may malfunction over time.
Also, you must ensure that smart gadgets take strong measures to secure your data. So, there is always a possibility that cheap smart gadgets may cut down on security measures and protocols to reduce their prices.
To conclude, these are some dos and don’ts that I’ve experienced while creating a smart home. Other than this, I’ve got a little piece of advice before wrapping up.
Just like smartphones or other electronics, smart gadgets also receive frequent software and firmware updates. These updates can contain enhanced features, security patches, bug fixes, and more. And to ensure that your smart devices stay efficient, always install these updates on time.
